@Jez2008UK Notice that he stops decreasing the shutter speed when the exposure for both the background and the ambient are nearly balanced. If he'd continued to decrease the speed, the model would indeed become overexposed. To go beyond that balanced point, the flash-lit model would have to be placed in a shadow, as to not recieve so much of the ambient light. That would make the background lighter than a "correct" exposure, but sill result in a correct one for the model.

@Jez2008UK the flash is lighting the model, not the background, hence the need for slow shutter speed. the flash is brighter than the light compensated by slow shutter speed

Wow, this is an incredible tutorial. Mark does a fantastic job of simplifying a subject that could otherwise be very confusing. Great job!

Excellent

Fantastic illustration, and I really like this guy's style of explaining. Thank you.

But I have ONE question (sorry I'm new to this);

Why, when he decreases the Shutter speed doesn't the Model become overexposed ??

I'd have thought that by increasing the amount of time the shutter remains open, more light will be allowed to fall on the model and she'd become lighter (just as the background is becoming lighter as well) ??

The best and most practical videos I'v seen on here. More importantly, he tells & shows you w/ illustrations how the camra works. Without knowing this basic stuff, your at the mercy of the salseman & confusing marketing blig & hype.

Now I know why most people don't teach like this – why? Cause this actually treaches u something. They don't want educated consumers; they want u to buy that junk.

Whe using a white background always illuminate the background to maintain the whiteness and separate the subject, place a strobe or your lights off to the side
( 1 each ) and aim them at the background, it prevents the color from spreading and keeps your whites white.
