What's a good camera for an older amatuer photographer?

2

My father is recently retired and would like to get into photography. Can someone suggest a good camera that's easy to use, is capable of capturing panoramic shots, and produces high quality pictures.

Thanks

All my colleagues are in their late 50's to 60's and they all use DSLR's.

Of course they have all taken classes in photography and have some experience using 35 mm SLR cameras.

Take your dad in to a camera store that sells both Nikon and Canon DSLR's and have him hold them in his hands and see which he likes the best.

If cost is a factor, the most bang for the buck right now is the Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens for under $470 on Amazon.

If he really desires to get into photography, developing, printing and enlargng, then I would suggest an older speed graphic, or crown graphic plate camera.
They usually come with a very good multi element lens, and can take very good pictures when used correctly.
These are primarily for black and white photo's, and I used one for many years and got into hand coloring with oils.
I particularly like the 4×5" format, although they can be had with 3-1/4 x 4-1/4 format and use roll film backs which will make cheap color shots possible.
This is all a matter of ones taste and how deep he wants to indulge.
